Ferries to Naxos
Naxos is one of the biggest and most beautiful islands in the Aegean Sea. Naxos forms part of the Cyclades islands together with Mykonos, Santorini, and Paros etc. The island stands out for the endless beaches gifted with crystal turquoise waters. Some of these beaches are particularly preferred by surfers of worldwide prestige due to the strong winds blowing during July and August. The cultural inheritance since the ancient Greek, Byzantine and Venetian era, the natural beauty of the mountain Zas and the picturesque villages will surely amaze you and make you sad for not being able to spend at least 15 days in this blessed island.
Daily itineraries depart from Piraeus and Rafina (the second most significant port of Athens). Select the ferry type of your preference. Sea Jets runs itineraries with catamarans, while Blue Star Ferries and Hellenic Seaways offer cheaper ferry tickets with ferry boats which are slower than the catamarans, yet of equal quality of services. Naxos can be easily combined with daily trips to destinations nearby such as Mykonos, Paros and Santorini.
The port is located on Chora, the capital of Naxos. Two emblematic constructions catch the visitor’s eye before they even get to descend from the ferry boat: “Portara” which seems to be the remaining entrance gate of a Greek ancient temple most likely dedicated to Apollo, and the Venetian castle which encloses the main part of the capital. We recommend an evening stroll through the traditional part of the capital in order to admire the architectural style of the mansions, to have a mohito made of local ingredients and to prepare yourselves for the island’s nightlife just a stone’s throw from the castle area.
Naxos is graciously gifted with numerous byzantine churches and renaissance towers. Fortunately, many of these towers have been preserved and host every summer interesting festivals (paintings and sculptures expositions, dance and music festivities). The Zas Mountain, the highest of the Cyclades islands provides an excellent opportunity to hiking and trekking activities. Since the local public transportation is not really accurate, neither frequent we suggest you to rent a car, otherwise you won’t be able to visit the exquisite beaches (Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, Plaka, Kastraki, Stelida etc.), neither the traditional villages of Filoti and Apeiranthos.
Naxos is a unique summer destination. Plan your trip to Naxos with cheap ferry tickets booked on euroferries.com.
